Ruth Roman is the youngest daughter born to Lithuanian and Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. The young woman was just a toddler when her father who was an carnival barker, died. The mother of the family had to work in jobs including waitressing and cleaning. Ruth was a student and grew up in poverty within Boston Massachusetts the tenement districts. She left the school only after two years to pursue an acting career. Her journey was not without obstacles. her path to success. When she was in New York she was hired to take photos for a publication about crime however, no theatre opportunities were offered. Her next job was as an "hat check" lady at a club but she quit and moved back to Boston. She worked as an usherette during the early morning hours and also was a part of the New England Repertory Company by night, which was her first permanent acting gig. The study of drama helped her to earn her degree at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
